Healers of the World. Eric and I have traveled the world. In our journeys, we have interacted with countless people, strangers we randomly met along the way, acquaintances and colleagues – some of whom have become dear friends, and family. Collectively, we have visited 112 places throughout the world. And we continue to travel and discover.
Four years ago, we bought a bluewater sailboat and hope to one day sail around the world. In doing so, one of our goals in life is to collect oral histories of people we encounter on our travels who consider themselves healers and ultimately compile them into a book entitled, ‘Healers of the World’. As a physician and professor of global health, not surprisingly, I am drawn to others, who consider themselves healers and seek to gain insight from their experiences. Whether a Duke University trauma surgeon, a barefoot doctor in China, a Mayan healer in Guatemala, or a shaman in Uganda, each has a story to tell from which we can better understand philosophies of health, life, and leadership.
The motivation for this project is reflective of the people that we have met and how each person or situation has shaped and can continue to shape our understanding and development.
